These sugar cookies have been my go-to for any birthday or special occasion since I first stumbled on the original recipe back in 2019 when planning my middle son, Bastian's 1st birthday party. They were pretty easy to make and were a huge hit with everyone!
After scrolling back through my photos from that time I feel like it's one of the only details from his party I didn't get a photo of. I LOVE a good party theme. And boy did I live for it when my boys were little. For Bastian's 1st birthday I decided on an 'Up in the sky' theme - think planes, clouds, hot air balloons etc. I spent the weeks leading up perfecting details and hand making decorations like my life depended on it.
Those clouds are cardboard cut outs with 100's of cotton-wool balls glued to them... I also made little plane flags that I attached to each paper straw and made hot-air balloons to hang from the ceiling of the Air BnB we stayed at/where we hosted the party. At the time we were living in CQ.
Back when we were only 'four hearts'
I tailored the original recipe so that they could be dairy and egg free, as my eldest son is anaphylactic to both and my youngest two boys were also allergic when babies. During their first years of life, I also cute their allergies out of my diet while breastfeeding as they reacted to even trace amounts in my milk. This huge lifestyle change, coupled with a lack of options available to purchase at the time, meant I became quite skilled at adapting recipes to make them dairy, egg and often soy free too.
As they are safe for many allergies, including nut-free (depending on milk and flavouring choices), they've made great treats to take into school for birthdays and I have even made them to be sold at the school fete (turns out they were a huge hit and one of the fastest selling items!).
Here are just a few of the cookies we have whipped up...
My fellow boy mums can probably pick who this is. I 'squared up' the heads when cutting the dough haha...
This year we made a batch of sugar cookies in the lead up to Christmas before also baking a batch of gingerbread on Christmas Eve. Pictured is our sugar cookie reindeer and my eldest boy, Teddy.
